The Seven Deadly Sins of SEO

Choosing the Wrong Keywords

If you choose the wrong keywords, it won’t matter how fabulous your content is; no one will be able to find it! You might be surprised at how often this happens. Keywords are not particularly intuitive and can be hard to place naturally into text because the way we search online and the way that we read are two very different things. For example, you may search for home office inspiration but the title of your blog may be Home and office inspiration ideas. These clearly don’t match, and while Google may realize what you were trying to say, it won’t get you those premium results!

Use Google Insights to research your keywords

Use the Good AdWords for further information on how to track your keywords

Both of these options are a free and premium service

Blocking Yourself From Google

While you may choose to hide certain pages from showing online, be careful that the code you use doesn’t inadvertently block your entire site! This happens frequently and can create a business nightmare. Remember to undo the code when launching your site or page, and test out your search compatibility to make sure Google is able to locate you successfully (and regularly).

This is the code you want to remove:

If you don’t see that code, open a browser address bar and type in www.site.com/robots.txt (replacing “site.com” with your domain name). Check first to see if the robots.txt file looks like this:

Forgetting Internal Anchor Text

While you can’t control how other people link back to you, you can add links to your site to generate higher pull resources from your own site.

Link “read more” to encourage page views on related topics

Link photos and multimedia to gain the full benefits of optimization

Use researched keywords in key locations

Make Sharing Easy!

Google monitors your shares and adds them into your viral factor, so be sure to maximize ways for people to share your content. This is a win-win situation, as you will gain visibility, more traffic and higher SEO ranking.

Say No to Flash!

While we all love the look of flash websites, they are notorious for blocking content from Google and other major search engines that cannot read the flash code. Use a clean-cut website with minimal coding for best effect.

Use a Call to Action

Without this, all of your hard work and effort won’t pay off. Clearly tell your readers what you want them to do and why, and make it easy for them to do so. You will see immediate results! So many people forget this simple and effective marketing strategy!

Assuming Your Home Page is the Most Important Page…It’s Not!

Every one of your website pages should operate as the home or landing page of your site. Visitors rarely land directly on your home page. Instead, users will carry out a search, be led to a page within your site and learn everything about your organization from that point. Ensure that none of your pages are a dead end by including prominent branding, links to your home page and more about you. Be sure to add those relevant calls to actions in selected places as well. Now you have no excuse for committing any of the seven deadly sins of SEOon your website
